Is An MTHFR Gene Mutation Harming Your Health?

Is An MTHFR Gene Mutation Harming Your Health?

The influence our genetics has on health is a very new area of science.

It’s an especially remarkable period for nutrition, and one that is changing the face of medicine as we know it.

One of the biggest discoveries is the MTHFR mutation.

    MTHFR and Your Health

MTHFR, short for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase, is a critical enzyme in the body.

It’s required for Methylation to occur, a metabolic process that switches genes on and off, repairs DNA, activates folate/folic acid, and many other important functions.

Unfortunately, around 30-50% of us are believed to carry a mutation in the MTHFR gene, passed down from our parents. This is like a “defect” that can reduce MTHFR enzyme efficiency by between 30-70%, which in turn  significantly hinders the methylation process.

This can have a great impact on several aspects of health, from people with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autism, fibromyalgia, miscarriages, schizophrenia, severe depression, and cancer to name a few.  Those with a “bad” MTHFR mutation are at an increased risk for health problems if the issue is not addressed.

Alongside a low folate diet, it can also lead to a Folate Deficiency, which has major health implications on its own.

    The Solution

Fortunately, we can now test and detect an an MTHFR mutation, including the severity.

By following a high folate diet catered to your specific needs, as well as supplementing with the appropriate nutrients, any potential harmful effects can be minimised or even eliminated completely.

At Darwin Dietitians, we specialise in testing your MTHFR gene and methylation status. Best of all, you don’t have to be in Darwin to do it. Consultation is done by skype, and then the DNA kit is sent out to you from the lab. After you have mailed your saliva sample back to the lab, results are sent to Darwin Dietitians where they will then be interpreted with you over skype once more.
